After nearly three years with our small Philly media startup, I’ve been promoted to editor of Billy Penn.
This comes during an exciting time for our parent company, Spirited Media, but I’m most excited about what’s ahead for our seven-person staff in Philly.
I joined Billy Penn pre-company, pre-website, pre-audience. Back in 2014 when we launched out site, there were moments when literally zero people were on the site and Facebook posts went unliked. Now we have a robust social media presence, a daily newsletter, popular happy hours and two sister sites in Pittsburgh and Denver. We also have a loyal — but small — audience in Philly.
Three years in seems like a fine time to shake up our editorial strategy. We’ll be bringing on new staff and expanding our coverage, with one main goal in mind: representation. Our staff and our site should look like Philadelphia and tell its stories. We’ve made it past startup mode and now it’s time for grow up mode.
If you follow me on Twitter, you know I’m passionate about my native Philadelphia. And that I believe it’s the job of local media to represent everyone who calls this place home. Philly is special and diverse, but also segregated and siloed. Reporters can highlight what’s working and evaluate what isn’t, but we also need to do the work ourselves.
I’m thrilled to be at the helm of Billy Penn, and excited about serving even more of our city.
